How do you see design today?

Fred Oliveira on October 4, 2007

As some of you may know I’ll be conducting the opening panel at O’Reilly’s Web 2.0 Expo this November in Berlin. It’s going to be a panel about how design has changed in the last few years to take center stage in the business mindset.

In preparation, I am collecting statements about what design means to people and businesses today - and that means I need your opinion too. So how do you see design, and the role of the designer in your area and business? If you have any thoughts on the topic, feel free to leave a comment or drop me an email. I’d love to hear what you have to say.

How I see design…

design is the commitment between an intuitive usability and a captivating look.

I see Design as a blend of philosophy and process- one that has been rapidly evolving in the last few years while also integrating itself into business philosophy and process.

In its most simple form, Design is planning and manipulating elements to the form and function that you’ve intentionally planned for. More specifically, Design is putting thought, care, and reason into every piece you can- while doing your best to provide sound evidence for the decisions you make, large or small.

While engineering is the art of making things work, and marketing is the art of selling stuff, design is the art of making people use and enjoy them.

Echoing Cody: Design means it’s that way by choice, not accident.
